Okoroire Hot Springs and Hotel…

Okoroire Hot Springs Hotel is located within the Waikato region of the north island of New Zealand. Centrally positioned between Rotorua and Hamilton, it is a perfect position for exploring the local attractions, including Hobbiton, the famous Lord of the Rings movie set.

The heritage listed Okoroire Hot Springs Hotel, originally built in 1889 from native timber, sits on 70 acres of lush New Zealand land. The building itself is full of New Zealand character. Though slightly rough around the edges, the Okoroire Hot Springs Hotel warrants potential old-world charm.

The historic hotel houses 21 rooms, its own 9-hole golf course, an onsite mineral hot springs area, restaurant and a classic pub teeming with locals enjoying a drink or playing billiards.

All accommodation offers tea/coffee-making facilities, a desk and a private bathroom with a bath or shower. Some accommodation may include a kitchenette or a patio.

The property offers wedding and event facilities, and also conference rooms if required.

Although we did not stay at Okoroire Hot Springs Hotel, we did enjoy a relaxing swim at the hotel’s thermal mineral hot spring pools and an evening meal at the restaurant.

The secluded hot springs area is a mere 300m walk from the hotel through a pathway surrounded by tall trees and native bushland. The peaceful surroundings leading to the pools provides a taste of the surrounding bushwalking trails such as the Blue Spring tracking course and the Te Waihou Walkway. Further along the path a door with Maori wood carved statues separates the rest of the world from the oasis that lies beyond. The rich greenery of ferns and shrubs encompassing the pools provides a serene feeling with nature. The three thermal pools are adjacent to the Waihou River, and the gentle roar of the river is soothing whilst soaking in the warmth of the pools.

These completely natural pools, which are beneficial for many health issues and ailments are a perfect way to relax and unwind. The secluded location radiates harmony and tranquillity. The pools are beautifully constructed and decorated with stone and pebbles, producing a slippery surface, hence caution is required when getting in and out of the baths.

There are adequate change rooms and toilets at the pools and the hot springs are open to the public as well as guests from 7:30 am to 7:00pm, seven days a week. The cost is $16.50 NZD per adult and $8.00 NZD per child and the temperature remains at around 38 degrees Celsius.

The informal restaurant area serves a decent menu. Meals can be enjoyed within the historic building or on the outdoor decked area while watching the sunset over the green grassy golf course. Wicker furniture adds to the charm of the era and the atmosphere. Though we lucked out with the fish and chips (the fresh fish was unfortunately unavailable and substituted with processed frozen fish), the rest of the meals were pleasing. The salmon being star dish of the evening.

With some tender loving care and attention to detail, Okoroire Hot Springs Hotel, has great potential. Restoration can transform this casual lodging into a grand residence, and by utilising the exceptional mineral springs area and golf course, Okoroire Hot Springs Hotel, would see many of its visitors return. Every rose has its thorn, and I hope Okoroire Hot Springs Hotel can enhance and promote these positive attributions of theirs to encourage their business to grow.
