Valeggio sul Mincio, Borghetto…

Within the province of Verona, and less than 15km from the grand Lago di Garda (Lake Garda), is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Borghetto is colourful and breathtaking, and resembles a magical fairy tale scene.

Enclosed by historic walls and towers, which was once Borghetto’s defence system, the picturesque views from Ponte Visconteo (the bridge), with Castello Scaligero (the castle) perched high on the hill in the background, are captivating.

Borgetto offers stunning natural landscapes alongside the Mincio river. This romantic site is perfect for an intimate dinner at the local trattoria or a special getaway at one of the few B&B’s available in the village.

Borghetto was a short visit, as we stayed in the nearby town of Valeggio sul Mincio, at a quaint B&B. Agriturismo Le Nosare, is a family run farmhouse that dates back to the 20th century. Surrounded by lush vineyards and the green hills of the Colli Morenici, this cosy B&B provides the perfect opportunity to be one with nature and relax amid the tranquil settings.

During our stay at Agriturismo Le Nosare, we were easily able to visit Venice and Verona  for the day by car. It was a pleasant change not staying in these bustling cities and afterwards returning to the peace and quiet of the countryside. On our way home one day from Verona, we stopped into a local restaurant, Alla Passeggiata. This welcoming family run trattoria, located on the banks of the Mincio River, provided traditional, homemade meals, including the renowned “Nodo d’Amore, Tortellini di Valeggio.” (Tortellini, named “The Love Knot”. My next post explains the story behind this delicious dish!) There is also a festival each year on the Visconteo Bridge of Borghetto sul Mincio, where thousands of Italians gather and feast on this traditional tortellini, seated together on massive tables along the Ponte Visconteo. Including fireworks and a medieval costume parade, this is a real community feast, celebrated within the mystical beauty of Borghetto.

 When to travel:

During the summer months of June, July and August, is a good time to visit. Alternatively, during late spring and early autumn, the temperature is milder.

 How to get there:

Air

Verona-Villafranca Airport is the closest airport and is 16km away from the centre of Valeggio sul Mincio.

Train/Bus

From Stazione Peschiera del Garda, Peschiera del Garda, take Bus #46. This will take 33 minutes to Valeggio sul Mincio.

From Verona take bus #160 and this will take 1 hour.

Car

From Sirmione (Lake Garda), 29 min (21.6 km) via SP28

From Verona, 33 minutes (28km) via SP24

From Mantua, 34 min (25.8 km) via Str. Roverbella Bancole
